DECATUR FIRE DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM 18-01 Date: January 10, 2018 To: Honorable Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe City Council Members From: Tim Gleason, City Manager Jeff Abbott, Fire Chief RE: Purchase of Property for New Fire Station#5 330 W. Mound Rd. SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: The Council is being asked to approve the purchase of property located at 330 W. Mound Rd. for the sum of$29,400.00. The property will be used for the construction of a new fire station to replace the current fire station 45 located at 225 E. Christine Drive. BACKGROUND: In 2015,the Decatur Fire Department consulted with Dewberry and Associates to perform a study of all the City's fire stations structural conditions. The study concluded that four(4) of the seven(7) fire stations were in acceptable condition to be rehabilitated and remain in service. The other three (3) stations were in poor condition and needed extensive rehabilitation that would exceed the cost to construct a new station. Therefore,the fire department began the rehabilitation of the four(4) stations that could be brought up to current standards. The fire department then began looking for locations that would be suitable for the construction of new fire stations. The location at 330 W. Mound Rd. was deemed an acceptable location for the replacement fire station#5. A purchase option was agreed to with the current owners of the property pending City Council approval. Public meetings were held, and the Plan Commission voted to approve a conditional use permit for the location. The City Council then approved the zoning change to allow a fire station to be constructed on the property. POTENTIAL OBJECTION: Unknown STAFF REFERENCE: Jeff Abbott,Fire Chief, 424-2811.
