Objectives
The overall objective of this proposal is to provide hydrologic, suspended sediment, and nutrient
monitoring at three sites in the Upper Sangamon River watershed. This monitoring data will provide data
that will be used by the city of Decatur to develop a watershed management plan to protect the drinking
water supply to the city and local communities and industry.
Project Tasks
To accomplish the project objectives, the following tasks will be undertaken.
Task L Collect hydrologic,stage/discharge, data at monitoring stations
At all three stations,bi-weekly, a manual stage reading will be collected, as well as other site
condition observations. Stream discharge rating curves that were developed by ISWS prior to 2008 for the
Friends Creek bridge at Rt 48(ISWS#102)and Long Creek at Twin Bridge Rd. (ISWS#101)will be
verified and updated with several manual discharge measurements made over a wide range of stages.
Task 2. Collect suspended sediment and nutrient samples at monitoring stations.
Bi-weekly suspended sediment,nitrate-N and total phosphorus samples will be collected by a
field technician. Suspended sediment will be collected using a depth integrated method when conditions
allow. Samples will be delivered and analyzed at the ISWS Public Service Laboratory in Champaign,
Illinois.
Task 3. Collect turbidity,pH, and temperature at monitoring stations.
At all three stations, during each visit, in-situ turbidity, electrical conductivity and temperature
data will be collected using equipment supplied by the City of Decatur. The City of Decatur will also
supply all necessary calibration consumables.
Deliverables
The deliverables for this project are the data described in the above tasks. Hydrologic, suspended
sediment, and nutrient data collected at each of the monitoring stations will be processed, computed, and
compiled. Data will be maintained in a database at the ISWS and provided quarterly to the city of
Decatur, IL and their designated consultant,Northwater Consulting.
4
