May 17, 2021
TO: Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe & Members of the City Council
FROM: Scot Wrighton, City Manager
Jon Kindseth, Deputy City Manager
RE: Purchase of 3550 E. Chestnut Ave. for Fire Station #7
The City Council has authorized the acquisition of suitable property for a replacement of Fire
Station #7, in accordance with the recommendations of the city's fire station consultant and
architect, Dewberry&Associates. Finding an available property geographically suitable,
accessible, and affordable has been the goal, in order to facilitate this new station. The City has
purchased one property and has secured an option to purchase the adjoining property located
at 3550 E. Chestnut Ave.
The current site plan for the new station calls for the new fire station to be located primarily on
the property 3550 E. Chestnut, with a small portion of the foot print also on the adjoining
property at 3530 E. Chestnut. The City will subdivide a narrow strip off the property at 3530 E.
Chestnut and combine it with the 3550 E. Chestnut property, giving the City a larger tract for
the new fire station. A copy of the proposed concept plan is attached.
Fire Station #7 is a small fire station on the southwest corner of the airport that is leased from
the Decatur Park District. The Park District runs their own fire operations for the airport out of
this facility and will likely continue to do so after the City builds anew station #7. This station
is no longer geographically situated to best serve the growing portion of the city, east of the
lake. The afore mentioned E. Chestnut properties at 36th St. & Route 36 are more
geographically centered within the current and projected service area of the Decatur Fire
Department, east of Lake Decatur.
