5/14/2021 Item Coversheet
In
Public Works
DATE: 5/7/2021
MEMO: 2021-25
TO: Honorable Mayor Moore Wolfe and City Council Members
FROM: Scot Wrighton,City Manager
Matt Newell,P.E.,Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Installation of Stop Signs at the Intersection of East Wallace Avenue at North 31st
Street Facing North 31st Street.
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the approval of the attached Ordinance authorizing the installation of a stop sign at the intersection of Wallace
Avenue and 31 St Street facing 31 St Street.
BACKGROUND:
City Staff was contacted by a resident with a concern for traffic traveling through the intersection of Wallace Avenue and 31st
Street. There are currently no yield or stop signs at this intersection.A review of accidents at this intersection showed at least two
accidents in the last three years that may have been avoidable with stop signs. Combined with the low traffic volume of 527
vehicles per day driving through the intersection, the accident rate is high for this intersection indicating that a two-way stop may
be beneficial for safety. City staff proposes installing stop signs facing 31St Street since Wallace Street has higher traffic volumes.
J
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION:
There have been no prior Council actions.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: No objections anticipated.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None
STAFF REFERENCE: Matt Newell,Public Works Director,and Griffin Enyart,Assistant City Engineer.Matt Newell,Public
Works Director, will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
Budget Impact: Budgetary impacts are approximately$200 for the installation of the requested signs and pavement markings.
Staffing Impact: Approximately 4 hours of staff time to make and install the signs.
SCHEDULE: Stop signs are usually installed within 10 days of approval.
ATTACHMENTS:
Description Type
Ordinance Authorizing the Installation of Stop Signs at
the Intersection of East Wallace Avenue at North 31 st Ordinance
Street Facing North 31 st Street
Location Map Backup Material
https://decatur.novusagenda.com/AgendaWeb/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=3406 1/1
