While local data is not available,within Illinois, <br /> heavy drinking rates are highest among persons aged 25-44(9.9%), followed by persons aged <br /> 18-24(8.7%), and persons aged 45-64 (6.8%). By race and ethnicity,non-Hispanic Whites have <br /> the highest heavy drinking rate(8.7%), followed by non-Hispanic Blacks(6.8%), Hispanics of <br /> any race(4.80/o),and non-Hispanic Asians(4.7%). Males have higher heavy drinking rates <br /> (7.9%)than females(7.2%).Heavy drinking rates are highest among the highest income earners <br /> at 8.9%, closely followed by persons with the lowest income(8.6%). Persons identified as <br /> unmarried couples have the highest heavy drinking rates(11.8%),followed by never married <br /> persons (10.5%)and persons who are divorced/separated(8.10/6).1 Macon County data is not <br /> available,but within Illinois 64.3 percent of recent mothers reported alcohol use in the three <br /> months before pregnancy 5, and 5.2 babies per 100,000 were born to mothers who drank alcohol <br /> in pregnancy.6 <br /> While Illinois was experiencing an opioid overdose pandemic prior to the onset of the <br /> coronavirus pandemic,opioid overdoses surged during the pandemic. Statewide,the number of <br /> opioid overdose deaths in the first three quarters of 2020 were 36%higher than the first three <br /> quarters of 2019. The annual number of opioid overdose-related ED visits increased 16.8%and <br /> EMS encounters increased 20.9% in 2020 compared to 2019.The trend for overdoses has <br /> increased since 2019,with the peak for ED visits,EMS encounters, and fatalities in May 2020. <br /> Since then,monthly totals have trended downwards. When looking at the rural/urban distribution <br /> of opioid overdose-related visits,Macon County is considered small urban.The small urban <br /> county grouping ED visit rate increased by 11%between the first quarter of 2020 and the first <br /> quarter of 2019. In the first quarter of 2020, age-specific fatality rates demonstrated a marked <br /> disparity between the same period in 2019.The rate of opioid overdose fatalities <br /> disproportionately occurred in the non-Hispanic(NH)Black or African American population in <br /> the 45-64 age range.In fact,the highest fatality rate in each age group occurred in the NH Black <br /> or African American population,except in the 25-34 age group,where the NH White population <br /> had the highest fatality rate. <br /> Synthetic opioids,specifically fentanyl,are the leading cause of fatal drug overdoses in Illinois <br /> and were responsible for 84%of opioid fatalities and 70%of all drug fatalities in 2020.8 Of the <br /> opioid related fatalities in Macon County in 2020,57.7%were synthetically involved.
