An Urban farm is:
1. intended to grow food for sale, either on a nonprofit or for-profit basis.
2. required to maintain a business license due to their commercial purpose.(The type of license is determined
by what is happening at the site. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection would help
determine the specific type of business license that's required.)
3. required to maintain one parking space off street per four employees
4. allowed to sell compost material generated on site, but not allowed to accept food waste from others for
composting.
5. required to obtain building permits and zoning approvals prior to construction.Other forms of city review
may be required depending on specific structures, activities, size, landscaping, licensing, public health and
stormwater management issues. Many of these requirements are identified in the project design or
permitting process, however, the applicant may be responsible to independently identify specific licenses or
permits that may be required. State of Illinois permits or requirements may also be applicable.
6. required to have fencing, along with landscaping and screening, for certain parking areas and outdoor work
or storage areas depending on location and the specific activity taking place. Required fencing should not
be chain-link but may be of a type that is complimentary to the surrounding neighborhood and is acceptable
to the Department of Housing and Economic Development.
2 https://eartlirepair.ca/resources/scenarios/lead-reinediatioil/
s Find St. Louis's competitive land repurposing grant process details here.
a Some organizations to consider with summer programs are:4H,the high school service organizations(all high
school students require service hours for graduation),church youth organizations, big brothers and sisters, and Boy
and Girl Scouts. Further, those organizations could be partnered with ADM,CAT,The Richland Community
College,The Macon County Extension,or small business partnerships through the Chamber of Commerce. WAND
TV has also promoted a continuous STEM feature in their news casts—the summer agriculture production projects
would be a good way to extend their coverage past the school year and obtain sponsors through the summer months.
Robert Martinez at WAND is the contact for the STEM broadcast sponsorship program.
S Some examples from St. Louis,Philadelphia, and Cincinnati include small, unplugged performance stages,a
fountain meditation park,a fishpond,a food truck park,an art display, and outdoor kitchens with seating/gathering
spaces.
