Cover Crop (Year 2-3) <br /> • Plant clover or similar cover crop in area to draw more contaminants out of the soil and prepare it for <br /> proper growing <br /> • Sample soil quarterly to check progress- repeat if needed a second year <br /> • Construct building/storage structure <br /> Programming (Year 2-3 and beyond) <br /> Mercy Gardens Component <br /> • Participants will prepare,cultivate, plant,weed, and harvest 9 acres of land in the OKO neighborhood <br /> • Other skills possibly gained: <br /> o Forklift Operation <br /> o Riding Mower Operation <br /> o Landscaping/Weed Eating <br /> o Property Maintenance <br /> • Produce/Plants harvested could be used in several ways: <br /> o Donated to local food pantries <br /> o Expand an effort for a free CSA to those in the neighborhoods of the workers and in OKO <br /> o Produce sold at local farmer's markets (opportunity for customer service experience) <br /> o Create a "Buy One, Give One" Model-every purchase of a CSA or basket contributes to a CSA or <br /> basket sent to a family in need <br /> o If yield is consistent, participants may be able to sell to restaurants or local distributors like <br /> grocery stores or to Central Illinois FarmFED <br /> Soft Skills Component <br /> • The program hours will include instruction in other areas to prepare participants for full-time <br /> employment including: <br /> o Financial Literacy <br /> o Resume Writing <br /> o Interviewing <br /> o Obtaining a Bank Account <br /> o Obtaining a Driver's License <br /> o Housing&Food Assistance <br /> o Securing Health Insurance <br /> o Case Management Services <br /> • This instruction would be conducted by partners already specializing in these services/trainings-See <br /> "Partnerships"section below <br /> • Other long-term opportunities <br /> o As The Good Samaritan Inn grows in its programming, a more comprehensive work experience <br /> may be available-possibly even year-round-via their Noon Meal program (serving a hot meal <br /> 365/year)and, in the future,via a local eatery owned and operated by Good Samaritan Inn. <br /> 4%04920-N.Union St.Decattir.11.62122 <br /> = 217-429-1433 <br /> (.OU(ISJIiI:ICIIHII l nn.u); <br /> 2 <br />
