Funding
• Initially, funding for labor costs would have to be provided via outside support including grants,
fundraising,and private sponsors
• It is our philosophy that it is better to invest more in less people than to invest less in more people-we
want to make a real, lasting impact
• Since it will be several years in the making,we can seek outside investment or structures including
outlets to sell the produce to see if we can lessen the financial burden on grants/donations
• Widening the net of organizations and private businesses involved in the project will create more funding
opportunities and a more sustainable model
• Over time, the program should help to sustain itself or supplement program costs through some of the
strategies listed above under"Mercy Gardens Component"
Capital Costs
• Tree and Debris Removal
• Top Soil (including tilling it in the soil)
• Seeds
• Water access in multiple locations including frost-free hydrants
• Irrigation system including hoses, sprinklers, timers, etc
• Small building including:
o Storage for tractor/equipment
o Prep/wash/pack station for produce
o Restroom/cooling area
o Large coolers for produce at 2 different temperatures
o Dry storage area
• 35HP Tractor with loader
• TX40 Power Harrow
• Delivery Vehicle or Trailer
• Forklift
• Misc.supplies including gloves,eyewear, kneelers,trowels, bags, crates,wagons,wheelbarrows,etc
• OPTIONAL: Greenhouse
• OPTIONAL: Work attire(esp.shoes)for participants
Measuring Success
• Some metrics of success could include:
o Completion Rate
o Employment rate
■ Possibly also keeping a more long-term look like"still employed after 3 or 5 years"
o Individual attributions of personal growth via stories and testimonials
o If the program continues long-term,we could consider cross-referencing with crime statistics,
employment statistics, and/or truancy or drop-out rates at Decatur Public Schools and Richland
Community College
o Pounds or servings of produce donated and/or households served
o.!o\.I-niun St.Decalin%IL G,,,,
217-429- 4;3
GoodSanwritanlnn.ur:;
5
