Honorary Street Responses
Cultural Iiia act On the CKI?
In everything, then,do to others as you would want them to do to you, Matthew 7:12, a
scripture that the Joyner family has lived by for decades and we must not forget, "This is my
commandment: love each other just as I have loved you."John: 15:12.Jefferson Joyner and
Catherine Perkins Joyner started this legacy must of community service that has continued
through generations. One of their first and most vital acts was opening the doors to their home
to give people in need a roof over their head. This started out with members of the community,
living not only on Webster Street but on the south side of Decatur, IL.
This bold and Godly act transcended into opening the doors to children in need of a place to
stay. That is when Jefferson Joyner and Catherine Perkins Joyner became foster parents. For
over 10 years Jefferson and Catherine were foster parents until her passing December 1991,
which trickled down the family line to their late son Lonnell Joyner who was a foster parent for
over 20 years before his passing in October 2007.After his passing Carolyn Joyner-Jarrett
stepped in his shoes taking on 4 adoptive children. Our cultural impact is simple, our
community is family. You don't always know everyone in your community, but they are still
family. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy mind. "This is the first and great commandment. "And the second is like unto it,Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself' (Matthew 22:37-39).
Historical Impact
The historical impact the Joyner family has had on the city of Decatur is often
highlighted in the community. When discussing historical impact, we focus ourselves on
four elements. Applicability, Effects, Novelty and memory.
Applicability: Legacies instilled within the Joyner family still remain prominent to this
day as the family has continued in the footsteps of Jefferson & Catherine (Perkins)
Joyner by providing affordable housing on a whole new level and the community
garden.
Effects:To this date families are still fed at little to no cost from the garden and
affordable housing is not only being provided on Webster Street but now through the
city of Decatur. Novelty: Decades later the work of the Joyner family continues through
feeding communities with the community garden, providing access to transportation
and providing affordable housing.
