Macon County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan 12024
Chapter 4: Risk Assessment
Risk assessment is the process of measuring the potential loss of life, personal injury, economic
injury, and property damage resulting from hazards. It allows emergency management personnel
to establish early response priorities by identifying potential hazards and vulnerable assets.
The risk assessment for this hazard mitigation plan update evaluates the risk of hazards prevalent
in the planning area and meets requirements of the DMA (44 CFR, Section 201.6(c)(2)).
4.1 Identified Hazards
Some hazards are a threat to all geographic areas while others (e.g., flooding) are more limited
in their extent. A thorough analysis was conducted to determine which hazards are of concern in
Macon County as part of the Plan update.
Macon County hazards were identified using a number of resources, including:
• Hazard planning documents developed by state, federal, and private agencies.
• National Weather Service weather data from the past 50 years.
• Data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Hazards that have been identified as significant in this county and that will be considered in this
Plan are listed below.
Identified Hazards
• Tornadoes
• Extreme Heat
• Drought
• Earthquakes
• Floods
o Riverine Flooding
o Urban/Flash Flooding
• High Hazard Dams & Levees
• Severe Summer Weather
o Hailstorms
o High Winds
• Severe Winter Weather
o Blizzards
o Winter Storms
• HAZMAT Incident
• Nuclear Event
Chapter 4: Risk Assessment 41
