a. T Guidepost Ir a /— �`f Eisenhower High School has its main access points on S 16th Street. The public identified several pedestrian safety issues throughout the roadway and intersections that are in need of improvement. Two intersections were identified by the public as in need of improvement and one of the intersections had multiple severe crashes. The intersections that were identified for improvements are: • S 16th Street& E Wood Street • S 16th Street& E Lake Shore Drive • S 16th Street& E Buena Vista Avenue • S 16th Street& E Riverside Avenue • S 16th Street& E WillaRoad Avenue • S 16th Street& E Vandehoof Street • S 16th Street & E Dickson Avenue • S 16th Street & E Cleveland Avenue • S 16th Street& E Lincoln Avenue Pedestrian Safety The west side of S 16th Street does not currently have any marked crosswalks and the public identified ` that it is difficult for high school students to cross S 16th Street from the residential area west of the fir"% High School. The lack of sidewalk forces students onto the roadway creating unsafe conditions. There are very few pedestrian crossings close to the school which can lead to students crossing at unmarked areas where vehicles are not expecting pedestrians to be present. Nearly every intersection on the roadway has either public transportation pickup or school bus pickup areas. The public noted that there are elementary school bus stops in unsafe areas on the roadway. Improving pedestrian safety is the highest priority for this roadway. Strava data shows that this area is also heavily travelled by bicyclists. Since there is such a heavy pedestrian and cyclist presence,the adddition of a mixed-use trail is likely warranted. The recommended countermesaures for this roadway are the addition of a sidewalk on the west side of S 16th Street and the construction of raised pedestrian crossings at the following intersections: • S 16th Street & E Buena Vista Avenue • S 16th Street& E Riverside Avenue • S 16th Street & E WillaRoad Avenue • S 16th Street & E Vandehoof Street • S 16th Street& E Dickson Avenue • S 16th Street& E Cleveland Avenue • S 16th Street& E Lincoln Avenue These intersections are highly travelled by students and contain almost no safe crossings. S 16th Street has no speed control at any of the identified intersections. The addition of raised pedestrian crossings along with curb extensions at these intersections would help control the speeds of vehicles and shorten the crossing distance allowing for safer pedestrian crossings. In the short term, marked crosswalks, additional crossing guards,temporary curb extensions, and/or crossing signage can be implemented to increase safety. The addition of a sidewalk on the west side of the roadway would allow for safer travel to the High School and bus stop areas. Due to a high amount of bicyclist acitivity it is reccommended that a bicycle lane be installed by removing parking and restriping the roadway or that a mixed-use trail be added around the school.
