Marley, Director of Public Works
SUBJECT:Bids for Roof Replacement for Salt Storage Dome
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends awarding a contract in the amount of$66,100 to Top Quality
Roofing to furnish roof replacement of the Salt Storage Dome located at the Municipal Service Center. Top Quality has
provided the necessary insurance and bonding requirements for this bid. (Purchasing Project Number 2015-10)
BACKGROUND:
The salt shed at the Municipal Services Center was built in 1987-88. The shed was designed and built by the Dome
Corporation of North America. Occasionally, the salt shed is referred to by the trade name"Domar."The shed still has the
original 27 year old shingles. Due to age and weathering, the shingles need to be removed and replaced. The domed shape
and steepness of the salt shed makes the re-roofing job more difficult.
The shape of the salt shed roof is the most efficient shape for storing and protecting granular rock salt.
The door to the salt shed faces northwest because most wind in rain storms during the year comes from the southwest.
There is little problem with rain blowing into the salt dome door.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
SPECIFICATIONS: The sloped roof and side walls will be shingled utilizing standard laminated multi-layer(architectural
style)asphalt shingle, Class A, 240/260 lbs./sq. 30 year warranty.
