COUNCIL COMMUNICATION FORM
PURCHASING & INTERNAL SERVICES MEMORANDUM
#2014-01
September 22, 2014
TO: Michael T. McElroy, Mayor and City Council
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Gregg Zientara, Financial Management Director
Matthew J. Sekosky, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: Purchase of Turn-Out Gear
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: The Fire Department seeks to purchase gear from
Municipal Emergency Services. The gear consists of Globe G-Xtreme turn out gear which
consists of a coat and pants set.
BACKGROUND: The turn out gear will be used by the Fire Department and will replace sets
that are 5 years old and older. The National Fire Protection Association requires turn out gear be
replaced when needed, but no older than 10 years old. The Fire Department replaces their gear
on a 5 year cycle because they have found that to be most cost effective.
The Fire Department will be purchasing 20 sets of gear. The gear is part of a three year bid that
was awarded to Municipal Emergency Equipment in November 2012.
The bid of Municipal Emergency Services for the Globe G-Xtreme style meets the City of
Decatur specifications.
The Fire Department received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for
most of this purchase. The FEMA grant award is $24,560.00. The remaining $6,697.60 will
come from the Fire Department's Clothing budget.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: None
STAFF REFERENCE: Matt Sekosky, Fire Chief, 424-2811. Jeff Abbott, Deputy Fire Chief,
424-2811. Matt will be at the council meeting to answer any questions the council may have
about this purchase.
BUDGET: $31,257.60 from the bunker gear grant and the General Fund.
