EXCERPTS OF THE
MINUTES OF THE
TRAFFIC AND PARKING COMMISSION MEETING
Thursday, July 25, 2013, 4:00 P.M.
Item#1 Request for a stop sign at the intersection of Calhoun Street/Johns Avenue
facing Calhoun Street.
Griffin Enyart reported that City staff was contacted by a City resident request ng a stop sign be
installed at the intersection of Johns Avenue and Calhoun Street. City staff rec uested accident
reports from the past three years, staff observed the intersection, and traffic coi ints and speeds
were collected. City staff observed the intersection during school dismissal fo Johns Hill
Magnet School and found that vehicles would park on both sides of Johns and alhoun.
Children would cross Johns Avenue with the assistance of a crossing guard, but no crossing
guard was present to assist with crossing Calhoun Street. There have not been any recorded
traffic accidents at this intersection within the past three years. Staff typically uses accident
reports to determine if there is a safety issue. If staff doesn't find an issue with safety, staff will
request a petition of area residents. However, since this stop sign would have inore impact on
traffic associated with Johns Hill Magnet School, a letter written by its principal, in favor of the
stop sign, was accepted.
Staff recommends that a stop sign be installed at the intersection of Johns Avenue and Calhoun
Street facing Calhoun Street.
Jerry Nihiser motioned to approve the recommendation; seconded by Nikki Garry, and on call of
the roll, Commission Member Garry, Luther, Meador, Smith, Newell, Nihiser, and Enyart voted
aye. The Chairman declared the motion carried.
