Map cracking over large area of pipe.
The Lake Shore Drive sewer rehabilitation design employs trenchless construction methods that
include lining manholes and installing a liner the length of the sewer. There are two major lining
processes that will be used on this project.
Process 1. Spiral Wound Pipe Liner: This process will be used on the Division A portion of
the project with pipe sizes ranging in size from 7 feet in diameter to 4 'h feet in
diameter. This process involves inserting a lining consisting of steel reinforced
PVC strips, similar in appearance to a large continuous strip of vinyl siding (see
Figure 7 below). The spiral strips are connected together to form a new pipe
surface(Figure 8). The small void on the outside of the pipe is then filled with a
cement grout that holds the new liner firmly in place.
W.
r
i
i NXI
Figure 7. Spiral wound liner strip. Figure 8. Lined section of sewer.
A strong advantage with the Spiral Wound system is that it can be installed
without blocking flows in the sewer. This reduces the cost significantly by not
requiring by-pass pumping of sewage around the work area.
Page 19
