DEPARTMENT OF WATER MANAGEMENT
Memorandum No. 2012-15
June 12, 2012
TO: Mayor Michael T. McElroy and City Council
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Keith D. Alexander, Director of Water Management
SUBJECT: Chlorine Gas Feeder Purchase
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the purchase of six chlorine gas feeders and
associated supplies from Siemens Industry, Inc. at a cost of$60,272.
BACKGROUND:
The South Water Treatment Plant has six original Wallace & Tiernan chlorine gas feeders that
have reached their useful service life expectancy of approximately 24 years. The feeders are
vital components of the water purification process.
It is recommended that the replacement feeders be sole sourced from Siemens Industry, Inc. for
these reasons:
• For 24 years we have had very few problems with the Wallace & Tiernan gas feeders.
• City staff is very familiar with this brand's operating procedures and maintenance
requirements.
• We have a small quantity of spare parts that can be used on the new feeders.
In order to significantly reduce costs, City staff will be installing the new feeders instead of
contracting out the installations.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION:
None foreseen.
STAFF REFERENCE:
Keith Alexander, Director of Water Management, 217-424-2863 or kalexander@decaturil.gov
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
This expenditure is included in the Water Non Lake Capital Fund.
Attachments
cc: Jim Hopkins, Ressler& Associates
Debbie Perry, Purchasing Supervisor
Steve Leach, Water Production Maintenance Supervisor
