Alexander, Director of Water Management W( <br /> SUBJECT: Agricultural Watershed Institute Research and Education Agreement <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing an Agreement with the Agricultural <br /> Watershed Institute(AWI) for Research and Education in the amount of$25,000. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> The AWI is requesting $25,000 in support for FY 2013 to continue work in their current research <br /> focus areas, educational programs, and additional subjects as determined in consultation with the <br /> City. Work in these categories directly support Lake Decatur watershed protection and <br /> management: <br /> + Sediment and nutrient best management practices <br /> + Water resources planning and management <br /> • Biomass energy <br /> • Shared learning program <br /> If approved, this will be the 7t' consecutive year of similar agreements with AWI. The <br /> agreements were funded at the $25,000 level until FY 2011 when funding was reduced to <br /> $20,000 due to budget constraints. Due to AWI operational cost increases since that time and the <br /> enhanced ability of AWI staff to provide technical assistance to landowners, agricultural <br /> producers, and other stakeholders in the Lake Decatur watershed to implement best management <br /> practices (BMPs), it is recommended that funding be returned to the $25,000 level. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: <br /> None foreseen. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: <br /> None. <br /> -STAFF REFERENCE: <br /> Keith D.
