Public Works Memorandum
No. 2012-26
DATE: March 23, 2012
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director
Deborah M. Perry, Purchasing Supervisor
SUBJECT: Renewal of Weed Spraying Contract
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends renewing the contract in the amount
of$9,257.15, for De Angelo Brothers to provide weed control and eradication of right of way
thoroughfares within the corporate boundaries of the City of Decatur.
BACKGROUND: The City's current contract with De Angelo Brothers which was approved by
the City Council on March 21, 2011. The original bid language allows for a one year renewal if
both parties are agreeable. De Angelo Brothers was contacted and they are in agreement. City
staff is satisfied with their services. There is no price increase.
The Forestry Division is responsible for keeping over 93,000 lineal feet of guardrails, sidewalks,
and medians weed free throughout the City. The weed spraying is not only done for aesthetic
reasons, but can also be a safety concern; for example, weeds must be kept out of driver's line of
site at intersections. The City contracts this work out to allow Forestry staff to work in other
areas.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: None.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Forestry requested the work and approves the bid.
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley, Public Works Director and Randy Callison, City
Forester. Richard Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer questions
of the Council on this item.
BUDGET: Funds for the expenditure are available in the Forestry and Lake Divisions Operating
budgets in Contractual Services.
This memo was prepared by Randy Callison, City Forester
Attachments: 1
I
