Public Works Memorandum
No. 2012— 15
DATE: February 27, 2012
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director
Deborah M. Perry, Purchasing Supervisor
SUBJECT: 2001 Pierce Dash Aerial Unit Engine Overhaul
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution approving an estimate of
$15,254.82 to Prairie International Trucks, Inc. for the Decatur Fire Department's 2001 Pierce
Dash Aerial Unit engine overhaul. It is also recommended that a 10% contingency authorization
be granted to the Public Works Director to pay material and labor costs to repair unknown wear
or damage discovered as part of the overhaul.
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION:
No prior Council action has been taken for the aerial unit engine overhaul.
BACKGROUND:
The engine on the Fire Department's 75' ladder truck, Unit 372, needs overhauled. It was found
from engine oil sampling and inspection at the City's Fleet Maintenance Department that the
engine has coolant leaking into the oil. This unit was taken to Prairie International Trucks, Inc.
for further diagnostics. After further inspection at Prairie International Trucks it was found that
one of the cylinder liners was pitted from cavitation causing coolant to leak into the oil pan. The
estimate for an engine overhaul received from Prairie International Trucks, Inc. for overhauling
the engine is $15,254.82.
Estimated time for the overhaul is two (2) weeks. The warranty available for this engine
overhaul is for one (1)year on parts and labor.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no known objections to this request.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Fire Chief Matt Sekosky.
STAFF REFERENCE: Fire Chief Matt Sekosky, Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director
and Rennie A. Young, Fleet Supervisor. Fire Chief Matt Sekosky and Richard G. Marley will be
in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
Page I 1
