Public Works Memorandum
NO. 2012-01
DATE: December 19, 2011
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Expenditure of Funds to Brown Traffic Products for Replacement of
Damaged Traffic Controller Signal Cabinet
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution approving
an expenditure of$7,895 with Brown Traffic Products, Inc. for the purchase of a traffic
signal controller cabinet. The cabinet will replace the stock cabinet that was used to replace
a cabinet destroyed in a traffic accident at the intersection of Decatur Street &Main Street.
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION:
No prior Council action has been taken on the purchase of this traffic controller.
BACKGROUND:
On Monday, November 7, 2011, City staff became aware of a traffic accident which
destroyed the traffic controller cabinet at Decatur Street &Main Street. The damaged unit
was removed and replaced with a stock traffic control cabinet.
This stock cabinet that was used to replace the damaged cabinet was purchased in March,
2011. The cost for the cabinet alone without the traffic controller, conflict monitor, loop
detectors and load switches was $3,810. Purchasing these essential components individually
would increase the cost to approximately$8,340.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this request.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Brown Traffic Products, Inc.
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley, Public Works Director, Matt Newell, City
Engineer and Jerry Nihiser, Traffic and Parking Supervisor. Richard Marley will be in
attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
Page I 1
