PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
No. 2009-34
DATE: June 22, 2009
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Co cil Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Director of Public Works
SUBJECT: Ordinance Prohibiting Parking
On the West Side of Victoria Avenue
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the approval of the attached Ordinance authorizing parking to be prohibited
on the west side of Victoria Avenue.
BACKGROUND:
At the May 12, 2009, meeting of the Traffic and Parking Commission, the Commission approved
a request from area residents and City staff recommending parking be prohibited on west side of
Victoria Avenue.
Public Works was contacted in April, 2009, by the residents at 264 Victoria Avenue. The
residents were concerned about emergency vehicles not being able to get down Victoria Avenue
because of the numerous car poolers parking their cars all day long on both sides of the street.
There have also been instances where the garbage was not picked up because the garbage truck
could not get down the street because of cars parked on both sides of the street. Victoria Avenue
is 24 feet wide from the face of curb to face of curb.
The attached drawing shows that a majority(15 out of 21) of the property owners along Victoria
Avenue signed the petition to remove parking from the west side of the street. Half of the
properties on the west side of Victoria front Edgewood Court and have garage and back door
access off Victoria Avenue.
No parking signs were installed in May under a 90 day order issued by the Police Chief. City
Council action will make this permanent.
Excerpts of the minutes of the May Traffic and Parking Commission meeting are attached with
the ordinance for Council's review.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: No objections anticipated.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Traffic and Parking Commission
Page I 1
