Public Works Memorandum No. 2011 - 83 DATE: December 9, 2011 TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council Members FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director SUBJECT: 2001 International 4900 Tandem Snow Plow Truck Engine Overhaul SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution approving expenditure not to exceed $12,320 to Prairie International Trucks for the Public Works Department's 2001 International 4900 Tandem Snow Plow Truck engine overhaul. PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION: No prior Council action has been taken for the Snow Plow unit engine overhaul. BACKGROUND: The engine on the Public Works 2001 International 4900 Snow Plow truck, Unit 221, needs overhauled. It has oil/water leaking out the of the engine breather tube. The truck was taken to Prairie International Trucks and diagnosed with excessive blow by due to a piston liner leakage. They are recommending the engine needs overhauled. An estimate received from Prairie International Trucks, is $6,246.80. They are ready to start on the overhaul. Due to uncertainties of the engine condition that cannot be known until the engine is dismantled, the cost to overhaul the engine could be as much as $12,320.00. Estimated time for the overhaul is two (2) weeks. The warranty available for this engine overhaul is for one (1)year on parts and labor. POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no known objections to this request. INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None STAFF REFERENCE: Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director and Rennie A. Young, Fleet Supervisor. Richard G. Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
