Public Works Memorandum No. 2011-15 DATE: March 10, 2011 TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council Members FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director SUBJECT: Ladder Truck Hydraulic Swivel Repair SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution approving an expenditure of$10,842.00 to Global Emergency Products, Inc. for the Decatur Fire Department's 2001 Pierce Quint aerial 75' ladder truck hydraulic swivel repair. PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION: No prior Council action has been taken for the repair of the ladder truck hydraulic swivel. BACKGROUND: The hydraulic swivel on the 2001 Pierce Quint aerial 75' ladder truck has failed and the ladder cannot be used. The Decatur Fire Department has two ladder trucks (a 100' and a 75')that remain in service. Repair work on the hydraulic swivel can only be accomplished by firms approved by the manufacturer. There are two approved vendors in Illinois, and both were contacted to provide Fleet estimates to repair the hydraulic swivel. The estimate received from Global Emergency Product, Inc. is $10,842.00 and the estimate from Municipal Emergency Services, Inc. is $14,350.00. Because of contractual obligations with the manufacturer, out of State vendors are not willing to supply a price quote. The lowest cost estimate for the repair work was provided by Global Emergency Products, Inc. of Washington, Illinois. There is approximately a three week lead time on the swivel and the ladder truck will be at the shop for four to five working days. POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no known objections to this request. INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None STAFF REFERENCE: Richard G. Marley, Director of Public Works and Rennie Young, Fleet Supervisor. Richard Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this item.
