1 }
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
No. 2010-60
DATE: November 24,2010
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Expenditure for Stock Traffic Control Box
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing an
expenditure of$5,330.00 with Brown Traffic Products, Inc. for the purchase of a stock traffic
control cabinet.
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION:
March 1,2010—Council approved Resolution Number 2010-33 appropriating $7,350.00 for the
emergency purchase of a Traffic controller cabinet from Brown Traffic Products.
BACKGROUND:
During the winter months traffic control cabinets are damaged at a higher rate than any other
time of the year. When a cabinet is damaged every effort is given to make the cabinet function
as long as it possibly can. Often the cabinet is destroyed and cannot be kept functioning. This
could present a life safety/liability problem for the City of Decatur. If a control cabinet is
knocked down/damaged at a major intersection, it could be weeks before a replacement is
received. The purchase of this cabinet is to serve as a replacement when needed.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no known objections.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None.
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley, Public Works Director and Matt Newell, City
Engineer. Richard Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any
questions of the Council on this item.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
Budget Impact: ,
Funding for this equipment is allocated in the Material for Traffic Signals General Fund.
Page 1
