North Star Route Road City Limits City Limits Chip Seal 2,600 South Davis Street Fitzgerald Road Welles Street Chip Seal 650 Total Length 13,610 The streets identified for mill and overlay work, constituting approximately 90% of the project costs, are in poor condition and have been delayed for many years in anticipation of the water main project that is currently being constructed to link the South Water Treatment Plant with the City's two elevated water tanks. Chip seal treatments are very common in street maintenance work. The treatment involves applying oil on the street and covering it with rock chips that are pressed into the road and set as the oil cools and hardens. This surface treatment is used frequently in the City on streets that see relatively little traffic and do not require the placement of a more expensive asphalt surface. The project is much smaller than in previous years due to the limited funds available for normal capital street maintenance work. City Engineering anticipates advertising for bids in August and should bring the project to the City Council for a project award in September.
