Mass Transit Memorandum <br /> No. 120209-1 <br /> December 2,2009 <br /> TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and Cit Council Members <br /> FROM: Ryan McCrady, City Manager <br /> Paul McChancy, Mass Transit Administrator <br /> SUBJECT: Proposal to Increase Transit Fares <br /> SUMMARY Staff recommends that Council adopt a Resolution increasing the <br /> RECOMMENDATION: fares for all Transit System services as shown on the attached <br /> sheet, effective January 1, 2010. <br /> BACKGROUND: Transit fares have not increased since May, 2002. Since then <br /> operating expenses have gone up significantly, the number of <br /> rides provided per year has increased by 50%, and the State has <br /> mandated that Transit Systems provide free bus rides to senior <br /> citizens and low income people with disabilities. In order to <br /> continue to generate the local funds needed to match federal and <br /> state operating grant funds, the Transit System must increase fares. <br /> The attached sheet shows the current fares and the proposed fares <br /> for all Transit services. Staff proposes to increase the adult bus <br /> fare from $0.75 to $1.25 per ride. All other fares would increase <br /> proportionately, with only slight variations due to rounding to the <br /> nearest $0.05. The proposed fare increase would affect all modes <br /> of service equally, and it would apply to all parts of the Transit <br /> System's service area. Therefore, the proposed fare increase does <br /> not create a disproportionate impact on low income and/or <br /> minority riders and areas of the City, or on any particular segment <br />' of the population. <br /> Staff estimates that the proposed fares will generate at least <br /> $87,000 per year in new revenues.
