. ,. -
. . , . .
FIRE DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM
NO. 2009-06
September 30, 2009
To: Honorable Mayor Michael T. McEIrQy and City Council
,p'Nl
From: Ryan McCrady, City Manager 'N`
Matthew Sekosky, Fire Chief S
Subject: 1316 W. Eldorado
Property Adjacent Fire Station 3
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council approve
the attached resolution authorizing the purchase of an unimproved parcel of real estate
commonly known as 1316 W. Eldorado, adjacent to Fire Station 3. The purchase price
is $5,000 plus title and recording fees, and will be spent from the City's general fund.
BACKGROUND: The current location of Fire Station 3 is well suited to meet emergency
response times on the West end of Decatur. Our apparatus have easy access to major
routes of travel in all directions providing a rapid response.
The station has been a landmark to the entrance of Fairview Park since 1927. One fire
crew, 4 firefighters, is assigned to the station each day. The station has finro bays for
fire vehicles, a combination kitchen and dayroom with sleeping quarters and a bathroom
are upstairs. A supervisor's office was constructed in one of the apparatus bays for the
station officer. Exercise equipment, a work bench and PPE storage occupies the
remaining space on the apparatus bay area.
The station's apparatus bay area is adequate with the office removed for contemporary
apparatus but the living quarters isn't. The combination kitchen and dayroom is 245
square feet, too small, and the station doesn't have separate sleeping and restroom
facilities for females.
A modest addition on the west end of the current station along with upgrades in the
current sleeping and restroom areas will bring Station 3 up to the required standards for
a modern day fire station. The addition would be designed to match the architectural
features of the current statior► preserving the historical value of its original design.
The fire department is applying for a Homeland Security, Assistance to Firefighters, fire
station construction grant, to cover the cost for the Station 3 addition. The purchase of
the adjacent property would be required to complete the station addition and in the
event the Fire Department does not receive the construction award, the property would
be the City's and utilized for the station addition when funding becomes available.
