The recommended solution to serve the drainage area for the K-Mart pump station is to <br /> replace the existing K-Mart pump station and increase its pumping capacity. Unfortunately, <br /> the force main that transports sewage from the pump station to the City's gravity sewer is <br /> also operating at maximum capacity. The new station and force main will be increased in <br /> size to handle the flow from the drainage area. <br /> Enlarging the pump station capacity will require that the existing force main be replaced with <br /> a larger diameter pipe and the discharge location changed to a sewer with greater capacity. <br /> The existing force main is a 4" diameter pipe installed from the K-mart pump station to an 8" <br /> sanitary sewer at the intersection of Airport Road and Baker Woods Lane. The proposed <br /> force main is a 6" diameter pipe that would be extended to the intersection of East Cantrell <br /> Street and Mount Vernon Place where it will discharge into an existing 12" gravity sewer. <br /> The new discharge location is capable of handling the increased flow from the new 6" force <br /> main. The old force main had a maximum capacity of 130 gallons per minute at normal <br /> operating pressures. The new main will have a capacity of 450 gallon per minute at similar <br /> pressures. The preliminary estimated cost for the 6" force main is $320,000. <br /> BGM engineering services will authorize BGM to survey, design and provide detailed <br /> construction plans and specifications to obtain all necessary permits and to obtain <br /> construction bid prices. They will also provide project construction cost estimates along with <br /> legal description drawings for acquisition of the temporary and permanent easements needed <br /> for the installation of the proposed 6" force main. <br /> The City is currently under a Cooperation Agreement with the Sanitary District of Decatur to <br /> design and construct the proposed K-Mart pump station. Resolution 2008-231 authorizes the <br /> City to reimburse the SDD up to $138,000 for design and construction costs related to this <br /> pump station. Minor changes will need to be made to the pump station as a result of the K- <br /> Mart pump station study but the construction and design cost estimate remains at $138,000. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this project. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None <br /> STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley, Director of Public Works and Matt Newell, City <br /> Engineer.
