MANAGEMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT
MIS DIVISION
Memorandum No. 2009-07
July 1, 2009
MEMO TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City Council
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager {' I
Gerard J. Bauer, Assistant City Manager ,
David S. Johnston, Manager, MIS Divisio '
SUBJECT: Server Infrastructure Upgrade
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that Council approve the
resolution at Enclosure l., authorizing the City Manager to execute a purchase agreement
with S. E. A. Group, Inc. for the purchase of a Dell EqualLogic PS6000E storage area
network (SAN).
BACKGROUND: Council recently approved the purchase of server virtualization
software and a small number of very powerful rack-mounted servers, the master
computers that host all applications, control data traffic, and provide centralized data
storage for the many workstation computers on our network. These were essential first
steps toward the City's-long range goal of controlling costs by consolidating servers, and
will result in the replacement of as many as 11 major servers by as few as three. This
purchase provides the final hardware element needed for the project, an integrated array
of data storage devices, independent of the servers, but capable of serving the data
requirements of any or all of them. Current City infrastructure consists of multiple
dedicated storage devices contained within the server requiring the data. SAN
technology provides several major advantages, all with cost-saving implications: 1) the
capability for independent server upgrades without mandating the replacement of the data
storage devices at the same time, 2) more efficient use of storage capacity by elimination
of redundant storage requirements, 3) improved system reliability through greatly
enhanced fault tolerance, due to redundant dual controller design, offering no single point
of failure, 4) modular design to allow for growth when needed without affecting data
availability, and 5) reduced administrative costs resulting from the automation of
repetitive management tasks.
The summary of quotes received is provided at Enclosure 2. Staff recommends
acceptance of the proposal of the lowest cost bidder, S. E. A. Group, Inc, for $28,658.00.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: None anticipated.
1
