COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
Decatur Fire Department Memorandum
09-03
June 29, 2009
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and Cit Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Matthew J. Sekosky, Fire Chie
SUBJECT: Purchasin ProertX
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by the staff that the City Council
approve the purchase of property adjacent to Fire Station 3. The purchase price is $5000 and will
be spent from the City's general fund.
BACKGROIJND: The current location of Fire Station 3 is well suited to meet
emergency response times on the West end of Decatur. Our apparatus have easy access to major
routes of travel in all directions providing a rapid response.
The station has been a landmark to the entrance of Fairview Park since 1927. One fire crew, 4
firefighters, is assigned to the station each day. The station has two bays for fire vehicles, a
combination kitchen and dayroom, with sleeping quarters and a bathroom located upstairs. A
supervisor's office was constructed in one of the apparatus bays for the station officer. Exercise
equipment, a work bench and PPE storage occupies the remaining space on the apparatus bay
area.
The station's apparatus bay area is adequate with the office removed for contemporary apparatus
but the living quarters isn't. The combination kitchen and dayroom is 245 square feet, too small,
and the station doesn't have separate sleeping and restroom facilities for females.
A modest addition on the west end of the current station along with upgrades in the current
sleeping and restroom areas will bring Station 3 up to the required standards for a modern day
fire station. The addition would be designed to match the architectural features of the current
station preserving the historical value of its original design.
