McCrady, City Manager
. •
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Director of Engineering& f as ructure
,
SUBJECT: Support of Spring Creek Name Change
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staffthat the City Council approve the attached Resolution which supports
the proposal of Mr. Roger Peterson to officially change the name of Spring Creek, a tributary of
the Sangamon River in Macon County, to Ward Branch.
BACKGROUND:
Prior Council Action
There has been no prior Council Action
There are currently three creeks within Macon County named Spring Creek. One of these
streams begins southwest of Elwin and meanders in a northerly direction along the west side of
South Side Country Club, under South Taylor Road and north to join the Sangamon River going
under South Side Drive next to the Decatur Athletic Club. This stream has no connection to the
Spring Creek that flows in the north part of Decatur under Route 51 and southwest into Stevens
Creek near Garman Park.
South Wheatland Township farmer Roger Peterson sent a request to the United States Board on
Geographic Names (USBGN) in November 2007 asking that this southern stream be renamed
"Ward Branch" on all maps. This Federal board is a part of the United States Geological Survey,
a bureau of the United States Department of the Interior. The USBGN is comprised of
representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology,
and management of public lands. It is responsible by law for standardizing geographic names for
use by the federal government, and must approve any change before it can be applied to federal
maps and publications.
The USBGN has requested that the affected local governments, including the City of Decatur,
Macon County and South Wheatland Township, send a recommendation regarding the proposed
creek name change. Macon County sent the USBGN a letter of support in May 2008 and South
Wheatland Township plans to send a letter this month.
Page 1
