, , .
ECONOMIC AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT MEM RANDUM
No. 07-15
February 28, 2007
TO: Honorable Mayor Paul Osborne and City Council Me bers
FROM: Steve G ity Manager
Greg Crow , irector of Economic &Urban Develop er
Suzan Stickl , Senior Planner .wf _
Vasudha Pinnamaraju, GIS Planner •
SUBJECT: Change the street name from Seymour Street to North ailroad Avenue.
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff is of the opinion that the proposed street name
change would help in emergency response.
BACKGROUND: Seymour Street and West Semor Drive are both wthin the corporate limits of
City of Decatur. West Semor Drive is in the southwest part of the C'ty of Decatur and Seymour
Street is located near Grand Avenue and the Canadian National/ Illi ois Central Railroad in the
City of Decatur. In a recent emergency situation, emergency respo ders responded to both the
locations. It is important for all the emergency responders to respon to the correct address. At
the request of the Emergency Telephone Systems Board (ETSB , the Economic & Urban
Development Department is proposing to change the street name fro Seymour Street to North
Railroad Avenue.
The following information is relevant to the proposal:
1. Although Semor and Seymour are spelled differently they are omonyms. This tends to
create confusion among emergency responders.
2. Currently, there are no addresses issued on Seymour Street.
3. The proposed street name change will not effect any legally is ued addresses.
4. North Railroad Avenue feeds into Seymour Street. Changing eymour Street to North
Railroad Avenue would be a logical extension of North Railro d Avenue.
5. Staff believes that the proposed street name change will minirrlize the delays in
emergency response.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: NA.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: The proposed changes have be n reviewed and considered
acceptable by ETSB.
STAFF REFERENCES: If Council members have questions t ey may contact Vasudha
Pinnamaraju at 424-2781, vinram'dccaturnet.org
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS: NA
II
