Newell, P.E., City Engineer�� SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Installation of an All-Way Stop at the Intersection of Sedgwick Street and Stone Street SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the approval of the attached Ordinance authorizing the installation of an all- way stop intersection at Sedgwick Street and Stone Street. BACKGROUND: At the April 1 l, 2006, meeting of the Traffic and Parking Commission, the Commission approved a request from City staff recommending the installation of an all-way stop intersection to replace the existing 2-way stop at the intersection of Sedgwick Street and Stone Street.. The stop signs have been requested as a result of an in-depth traffic review started by City Engineering in early 2005. The Illinois Department of Transportation has been tabulating the statistics of the accidents occurring within the City in Microsoft Excel. This has enabled City staff to group three years of data and identify high accident locations within residential neighborhoods throughout the City. When identified, these locations are prioritized and reviewed according to traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, and traffic accident history. The initial review of City wide accidents yielded approximately 70 intersections needing further review. The current group of intersections requested for stop signs is the third group sent before the Traffic and Parking Commission and the City Council since May, 2005. Other intersections are currently under review and it is anticipated that one to two more groups of intersections will be sent through later in the summer and fall. POTENTIAL OBJECTION; No objections anticipated.
