  , ' .
.
Engineering & Infrastructure Memorandum
NO. 2008 - 4 2
DATE: May 12, 2008
TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and City Council
FROM: John Smith, Interim City Manager
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Director o Engineering& Inirastructure
Matthew C.Newell, P. E., City Engin'" _
SUBJECT: Emergency Sewer Repair: Alley Behind 236 North Dennis Avenue
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staffthat the City Council approve the attached resolution approving the
expenditure of$9,891.83 for the emergency repair of the sewer main in the alley behind 236
North Dennis Avenue, and that the Mayor be authorized to sign said resolution, and the City
Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
On Apri129, 2008, a City sewer cleaning device was caught on some damaged sewer pipe
while City crews were responding to a sewer complaint in the 200 block of North Dennis
Avenue. Televising was performed to determine the location of the cleaning device and the
nature of the problem. It was determined that severe bends in the pipe were damaged and
would not allow cleaning equipment to traverse the area. Since the cleaning device could not
be removed from the pipe, it was determined that the sewer needed to be excavated in order to
prevent sewage from being backed up into area homes.
The depth of the sewer exceeded the ability of City crews to perform the excavation work.
Upon an emergency order approved by the City Manager on Apri129, 2008, the City retained
the services of Entler Excavating to perform the work necessary to retrieve the cleaning device
and eliminate the damaged pipe bends. This work was accomplished under an emergency
order because all funds on the 2007 Miscellaneous Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project were
expended on previously scheduled work and emergency repairs.
Work commenced on Apri130, and was completed on May 1, 2008. The total cost for the
emergency sewer repair was $9,891.83.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this
resolution.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None
