Juneteenth celebrates the arrival of the news of the Emancipation Proclamation <br /> reaching Texas some 2 years and 6 months after it was signed by Abraham Lincoln. The ', <br /> celebration includes local groups as well as a few paid performers. �i <br /> The sponsoring group is the Afri,can-American Cultural & Genealogical Society. <br /> In the past, artists,volunteers,performers,and audience have a11 been 80-90%African- , <br /> American. It is expected to have similar numbers this year. Sixty to 75%of tlie I <br /> I participants are teens and tweens with the remainder being adults and children. Several <br /> af the performing groups are based in the inner city neighborhoods of Decatur and are <br /> � composed primarily of low and moderate income constituents. <br /> �' This program will help promote our goal of educating the citizens of Decatur <br /> about the African-American experience, including greater awareness of our organization <br /> and its prograxns. The spotlighting of achievement is a big part of this celebration. <br /> Advertising will include spots and a live remote on WDZ radio station. We will <br /> I have 2 bi116oards and flyer distribution in the targeted neighborhoods. <br /> ( Project Value to the Area: This is primarily a feel good get together for all persons who <br /> � value freedom. It is expected that education and understanding contributing to greater <br /> '� appreciation of African-American accomplishments will be the greatest value. �, <br /> � Responsibility for Project Maintenance: Our volunteers will make sure that the area is <br /> � policed for litter. � <br /> I Funding Request: $5,000. Funds will be utilized for sound system rental, insurance, <br /> ' garbage service,performer expenses, and promotion expenses. <br /> i Describe Applicant Contribution(25%of grant amount required in matching funds or I <br /> volunteer hours). Last year we contributed over 100 volunteer hours in preparation and <br /> carrying out this celebration.
