ENGINEERING & INFRASTRUCTURE MEMORANDUM <br /> NO. 2007 - 50 <br /> DATE: August 13, 2007 <br /> TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and City Council <br /> .. <br /> FROM: Steve Gar City Manager � � i�:��� , <br /> � <br /> Richard . rley,Director of Engineerin & Infrastructure <br /> Matthew ewell, P.E., City Enginee�� <br /> SUBJECT: LED Traffic Signal Improvements, City Project 07-OS <br /> Allocate MFT Funds for the Installation of LED Traffic Signal Improvements <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing a <br /> Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) Fund expenditure of$400,000 to install LED traffic signals on State Routes <br /> in the City with Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) lenses. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> On February 5, 2007, the City Council authorized an agreement with the Illinois Department of <br /> Transportation (IDOT)to retrofit the traffic signals on State Routes through the City with LED <br /> lenses to replace incandescent light bulbs. The City maintains approximately 140 signalized <br /> intersections throughout the City. The City is currently under agreement with IDOT to maintain 80 <br /> of the traffic signals in the City that are located on State Routes. In putting the project together, <br /> City Engineering estimates the retrofit work to cost about $5,000 per intersection for a total of <br /> $400,000. The State's portion of the project is estimated to be approximately$221,000 and the <br /> City's portion will be $179,000. The State will also share proportionately in the cost of the LEDs <br /> the City will purchase with a partial grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. <br /> The purchase of the LED Lamps will be approved by another Council action. <br /> Staff is currently working with IDOT to advertise a LED Conversion project for competitive bid. <br /> Bids should be brought before Council within 60 days. The LED upgrade work must be completed <br /> by June 30, 2008. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Illinois Department of Transportation <br />
