M rle Director of En ineerin Infrastructure
Y g g
Matthew C. ewell, P. E., City Enginee
SUBJECT: Emergency Sewer Repair at#7 Powers Lane Place
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution approving the
expenditure of$46,592.93 for the emergency replacement of a collapsed sewer main near#7
Powers Lane Place, and that the Mayor be authorized to sign said resolution, and the City Clerk
to attest.
BACKGROUND:
On March 26, 2007, the City crews were unable to extract their cleaning equipment from a
sewer on the near west side of the City near#7 Powers Lane Place. The sewer main was
significantly surcharged with little, if any, flow able to pass through the main. It was
determined that the sewer line needed to be excavated at the likely location where the sewer
cleaning equipment was stuck.
The work site was located in a heavily wooded area that was difficult to reach. The location,
depth of the main, and the likely extent of damage exceeded the City's ability to perform the
work. The City contracted with Barr&Robison Sewer and Excavating to excavate the site to
free up the City's cleaning device and allow a proper inspection of the damaged sewer main to
be made. When the line was excavated, televised inspection revealed that the sewer was
heavily infested with roots which had caused total collapse of the main in numerous locations.
It was determined that a significant portion of the line needed to be replaced immediately in
order to restore integrity to the area sewer system and prevent a major sewer overflow in the
area.
The contractor's work commenced on March 27, and was completed on May 7, 2007.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this
resolution.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None
