SUMMARY Staff recommends that Council approve an amendment of the RECOMMENDATION: agreement with CU Taxi / Illini Taxi exercising the first option year of the contract for paratransit services. BACKGROUND: The City has a contract with CU Taxi /Illini Taxi, the only taxicab firm operating in the Decatur area at this time, to provide paratransit services to people with disabilities under the Transit System's program, "Operation Uplift". The contract lists all of the specifics about this program and sets the maximum fares that may be charged by CU Taxi/Illini Taxi by year. The term of the original contract was from June 1, 2005, through May 31, 2007, with three option years that the City may exercise, if it chooses. The first option year would extend the contract from June 1, 2007, through May 31, 2008. The contract states that fares to be charged to Operation Uplift participants during each option year "shall be negotiated between the parties prior to the commencement of the option year." The tables on the attached sheet show the current and proposed fares for Operation Uplift participants, plus the current fares for non-participants. The fares proposed for the coming year are slightly less than the fares charged currently to non-participants. (continued) POTENTIAL No known objection to the proposed amendment. STAFF REFERENCE: Paul McChancy, Mass Transit Administrator BUDGET/TIME The proposed fares for the coming year are less than the fares IMPLICATIONS: charged currently to non-participants,but are significantly higher than the current Operation Uplift fares. However, the alternative would be significantly more expensive than that— expanding the Transit System's fleet of paratransit vehicles and providing all Operation Uplift trips with our own drivers and vehicles.
