Abraham Lincoln Agri-Business Awards <br /> The Abraham Lincoln Agricuiturai Awards program is being established to promote <br /> Agriculture and its impact on the citizens of the world and to celebrate individuals, <br /> companies, businesses and educational institutions that have made significant contrib�ations <br /> in this area. In addition, it allows for showcasing our 16"' President who was involved with <br /> and focused on agriculture. <br /> The following are the five award areas and how they link to President Lincoln's life. The <br /> people, companies, businesses, and education institutions recognized will exhibit exemplary <br /> leadership in these areas of concentration. <br /> Award Categories and their relationship to Abraham Lincoln: <br /> Lincoln & Education Award <br /> Will be given to a person, company, business, or educational institution. <br /> Labor could achieve its highest potential if workers were educated. Lincoln stated: "...no other <br /> human occupation opens so wide a field for the profitable and agreeable combination of labor <br /> with cultivated thought, as agriculture." His endorsement of education and his belief that <br /> farmers' interests were of primary importance indicated Lincoln's interest in agricultural <br /> reform. Interest in education, especially for the agricultural community, culminated during <br /> Abraham Lincoln's presidency with the establishment of the Land Grant College Act of <br /> 1862. This Act allowed for the donation of public lands to each of the individual states and <br /> territories which "... may provide Colleges for the benefit of Agriculture and the Mechanic <br /> Arts." The land grant act established such institutions that ultimately have become lowa <br /> State University and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. This award will be for an <br /> individual, company, business or educational institution that has demonstrated the same <br /> dedication and purpose to its professional endeavors that so marked the dedication shown by <br /> Abraham Lincoln to the profession of agriculture and agri-business. <br /> � <br />
