City of Decatur West End Tour Brochure
6. Description of Project
In November of 2002,the West End Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic
Places. The district has close to 2000 properties with 1707 contributing structures. Currently there is
very limited information distributed about the district and the history of the structures in the district.
Since public awareness and education is part of the City of Decatur's Comprehensive Plan for Heritage
Preservation and part of the Historical and Architectural Sites Commission's(HASC) annual work plan,
the Commission proposes to develop a tour brochure highlighting the West End Historic District.
The Commission recently completed the edit and reprinting of the walking tour brochure for the Decatur
Historic District which is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The brochure package
contains four different tours in addition to brochures of the city's historic park pavilions and historic
monuments. The tours are packaged inside a cover that is then inserted in a plastic sleeve. It is planned
to develop a package similar to this for the West End Historic District. (A copy of the Decatur Historic
Districf Walking Tours is included.)
The first step of the project is to determine which structures will be included on the tour. Members of
the Historical and Architectural Site Commissions, members of the West End Neighborhood Association
(WENA), and City of Decatur staff will review the surveys completed for the West End neighborhood
and decide which buildings will be on the tour. The plan is to highlight from 85 to 100 properties in the
tour brochure. Approximately fifteen hours are planned for this portion of the project.
Once the included buildings have been identified, the second phase of the project will be to begin
researching the properties for historic information. Again volunteers from HASC,WENA and other
volunteers will participate in the data collection. Volunteers will be shown how and where to collect
data and the information to include in their reports. Once the research is completed, a brief paragraph
will be written including a description of the structure and a brief history of the building and its owners.
The paragraph and the collected information will be submitted to the city staff. The second phase will
be completed in sixteen(16)weeks. Photographs of the identified structure will be taken during this
phase of the project.
Phase three of the proposed project will include the editing and rewriting of the paragraphs for a
consistent format for the brochure. Staff or a professional writer will complete the ediUrewrite which can
be completed in to two(2)months.
Once the editing is completed, the design and layout of the brochure will begin. Professional graphic
designers will be hired to layout the design of the brochure with photographs and copy. Staff and the
volunteers will review the work once completed. Any photo retakes cane be completed during this
phase. It is anticipated that phase four of the project will take approximately four months to complete.
After the design is completed, specifications will be written for bids to be solicited for the printing of the
brochure. City staff will compile the specifications for the purchasing department to solicit bids. Six
weeks will be allowed for this process.
The final step is the printing of 2500 tour brochures and the ordering of the vinyl sleeves. Eight weeks
will be allowed for the printing of the brochures. The brochures will be delivered to the convention and
visitors bureau and other venues for distribution to visitors and to the public.
.
w
