N well, P.E., City Engineer/(
M. Travis Stanley, Civil Engineer I
SUBJECT: McKinley Avenue Concrete Joint Repairs, City Project OS-18
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the
contract for McKinley Avenue Concrete Joint Repairs, City Project OS-18, to Beniach
Construction Co., Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of$84,976.00 and that the
Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest.
BACKGROUND:
Numerous streets within the City of Decatur are constructed of portland cement concrete (PCC)
pavement. A significant portion of the pavement maintenance / rehabilitation effort for a PCC
pavement centers around the many expansion joints. A great improvement can be made in the
ride and load carrying ability of a concrete street if its joints are properly maintained or, as in the
case of this proposed project, restored. This project involves removing deteriorated joints on
West McKinley Avenue from North Graceland Avenue to approximately 200 feet east of North
Monroe Street and reinstalling them in accordance with City of Decatur and Illinois Department
of Transportation Standards. This project also includes the replacement of adjacent curb and
gutter sections as necessary.
The project plans and specifications were prepared by the Engineering Division staff. The
project was advertised on July 12, 2005 and bids were opened on August 3, 2005. The results of
the letting are as follows (bid tabulation attached):
Compared to
Engineer's Est.
Bidder Bid Price Over(-Under)
Engineer's Estimate $ 86,206.50 -----
Beniach Construction Co., Inc. $ 84,976.00 ( -1.43%)
GM Sipes Construction, Inc. $ 89,457.00 3.77%
Kinney Contractors, Inc. $ 89,697.00 4.05%
