R2005-96 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE US ROUTE 36/ELDORADO STREET ENHANCEMENT PROJECT WHEREAS, the enhancement of the US Route 36 corridor from West Church Street to the Wabash Depot is a major component of and consistent with the Decatur Urban Corridors Master Plan and redevelopment of the Downtown; and WHEREAS, the goals of the Corridors Plan include providing a gateway to the Downtown, reducing clutter along the street, and providing an aesthetically pleasing streetscape; and WHEREAS, US Route 36 and US Business 51 corridors are a vital part of the City's transportation system and provide access to Downtown businesses and merchants along with historic landmarks including Wabash Depot; and WHEREAS, the goals of the enhancement project include establishing an intersection gateway to the downtown at US Route 36 and US Business 51, increasing the visibility of Wabash Depot from US Route 36, improving the visual impression along one of the major thoroughfares through the City and Downtown, and improving pedestrian safety; and WHEREAS, the City of Decatur has coordinated major efforts to revitalize the US Route 36 corridor through the implementation of the Olde Towne Tax Increment Financing District, local historic districts and the Near North Redevelopment Area Tax Increment Financing District. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS; ' Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Decatur hereby supports the US Route 36/Eldorado Street Enhancement Project.
