Perry, Purchasing Supervisor��' <br /> SUBJECT: Bids for water treatment chemicals <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends awarding contracts to the low <br /> bidders listed on E�ibit A for each of the water treatment chemicals for May 1, 2005 - <br /> Apri130, 2007. <br /> BACKGROUND: The chemicals in this bid are for the water purification process at the South <br /> Water Treatment Plant and the nitrate facility. <br /> The following is a list of chemicals and how they are used in the water purification process: <br /> Alum - to coagulate; clarifying agent <br /> Carbon - used for taste and odor control; control of atrazine <br /> Carbon Dioxide - lower the pH level; due to lime <br /> Chlorine - disinfectant; required by law <br /> Hydrofluosilicic Acid - reduces cavities; required by law <br /> Lime - softening agent <br /> Polymer - used as coagulant; lowers turbidity <br /> Sodium Bisulfite - removes chlorine <br /> Sodium Chloride - pulls nitrate from water <br /> Sodium Chlorite - disinfectant; used for taste and odor control <br /> Sodium Hexametaphosphate - used to counteract lime; prevents scaling; filter protection <br /> Sodium Hydroxide - increases alkalinity to meet lead and copper rule <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: None <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Water Management requested the chemicals and also <br /> wrote the bid specifications. They recommend approval of bids. <br />
