City of Decatur, IL Radio Path Survey
Overview
The City of Decatur presently utilizes a combination of radio and telephone as their
communication medium for telemetry throughout their water system.
A study will be performed to analyze the feasibility of using radio telemetry as a means of
data transmission to monitor the City's sources of water supply, and water distribution.
This study will establish the groundwork for the system and ensures a complete working
system at startup.
These front-end efforts will save numerous hours of trial and error and eliminate
interference and regulatory issues before the system is installed.
The study is divided into three major parts; a frequency search, a computerized path study
(Desk-top Survey) and a field site path survey (On-site Survey). The results will be
presented in a meeting with city personnel and consulting engineer.
I. Frequency Search
A. Search
A search will be conducted for existing frequencies in use in the vicinity of the proposed
monitoring sites. The preferred frequency is 450 MHz,with 900 MHZ spread spectrum as
an alternate frequency.
B. Frequency Analysis Summary: ,
A complete summary will be provided detailing the approach utilized to determine the
available frequencies and the results.
II. Desk-top SurveX
A. Computerized Path Profile Study:
A computerized path study is performed utilizing a digitized USGS topographical
database for terrain analysis and obstruction modeling. This study allows the engineer to
study the terrain profile and how it affects the proposed signal transrnission paths. Using
this information, the engineer is able to analyze the best radio paths based upon terrain,
