Newell, P.E., City Engineer ,,,^, W„r � SUBJECT: Garfield Avenue Bridge Over 22"d Street Cover Plate Retrofit City Project 04-16 SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the contract for Garfield Avenue Bridge Over 22°d Street Cover Plate Retrofit, City Project 04-16, to Halverson Construction Co., Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of$7,160.00, and that the Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest. BACKGROUND: In 2003, the City contracted with Homer L. Chastain & Associates, Consulting Engineers (HLC), to perform a detailed inspection of the Garfield Avenue Bridge over 22"d Street. The inspection determined the existence of a small crack in a weld along one of the steel bridge girders. The crack is not believed to be an immediate hazard to the stability of the bridge. HLC was contracted to prepare a design to reinforce the cracked area of the bridge. The design will secure the cracked area by attaching a steel plate to the damaged area of the girder. The project plans and specifications were prepared by HLC and City Engineering staff. The project was advertised August 3, and bids were opened on August 24, 2004. The results for the letting are as follows: Compared to Engineer's Est.
