 . .
COUNCIL COMMUNICATION FORM
PURCHASING & INTERNAL SERVICES MEMORANDUM
#04 - 30
July 27, 2004
TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and City Council
FROM: Steve Garman, City Manager
Ron Neufeld, Financial Management Director
Deborah M. Perry, Purchasing Supervisor.
SUBJECT: Bids for Diesel Exhaust Extraction System
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends awarding contract to Midwest Air
Pro to furnish one (1) 2004 Nederman Magna Track diesel echaust extraction system for Fire
Station#5 located at 225 Christine Drive.
BACKGROUND: The extraction system helps eliminate diesel soot and carcinogens in the cold
diesel smoke when starting the fire trucks inside the fire station. A large hose is connected to the
tailpipe of the fire truck and a fan then extracts the smoke out of the building.
The Fire Department is requesting the second low bid of Midwest Air Pro be accepted. The City
currently has three of the Nederman systems in place. Deputy Fire Chief Hansen states that all
the reserve apparatus has been modified to accommodate the Nederman echaust connection.
Magna Grip does not utilize the same type of connector which means reserve equipment could '
not be rotated to different stations when required.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: None.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: The system was requested by the Fire Department and
they wrote the bid specifications. They recommend approval of bid.
STAFF REFERENCE: Les Albert, Fire Chief 424-2811, Mark Hansen, Deputy Fire Chief
424-2811, will both be at the council meeting to answer any questions the council may have
about this purchase.
BUDGET: $11,200 from Public Works Capital budget.
