E., City Engineer <br /> SUBJECT: Salvaging Paving Brick from the Wabash Crossing Redevelopment <br /> Area <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> Staff recommends that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing the City <br /> Manager and the Director of Engineering and Infrastructure to authorize Entler Excavating Inc., <br /> to remove and salvage paving bricks from the Wabash Crossing development area up to a <br /> maximum expenditure of$30,000. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> City Engineering is developing a design and construction process that can be used effectively on <br /> brick streets. Many of the City's brick streets are in need of major maintenance. One of the <br /> major drawbacks to maintaining brick streets is acquiring brick to effect the necessary repairs. <br /> One of the great advantages that bricks possess is their durability. High quality paving bricks <br /> have a significant amount of life left in them despite the fact that they may have been in place for <br /> over 100 years. Some of the streets that are being reconstructed in the Wabash Crossing <br /> redevelopment area have utilized these high quality bricks as base material. They have been <br /> covered with asphalt in years past in order to maintain a smooth driving surface. �I <br /> This resolution authorizes the City Manager and the Director of Engineering and Infrastructure to , <br /> pay Entler Excavating Inc., to salvage the high quality bricks that exist on a portion of the streets �I <br /> in the Wabash Crossing area. Entler has quoted a price of$10.00 per square yard to remove the �� <br /> bricks from Condit Street between Warren and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and haul them to <br /> the Municipal Services Center. This salvaging will likely secure over 70,000 bricks that can be , <br /> cleaned up and reused on future brick street rehabilitation. Staff seeks the authorization to <br /> expend funds up to a maximum of$30,000 to salvage high quality bricks on some of the streets <br /> to be reconstructed in the Wabash Crossing area.
