B gg, Planning&Economic Development Manage� �, <br /> SUBJECT: Downtown Street Furniture Acquisition I <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of the attached resolution <br /> authorizing the purchase of 20 new waste receptacles for use in the downtown area. The use of <br /> remaining grant funds from the Macon County Solid Waste Department will permit the City to <br /> replace worn receptacles, as well as augment the supply of litter collection facilities in <br /> downtown, with no cost to the City of Decatur. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Cit of Decatur is annuall awarded a ant of $25 000 b Macon <br /> Y Y �' � Y <br /> County to use in solid waste programming. This grant may be utilized in a variety of ways <br /> related to enhancing solid waste reduction / collection efforts in the City of Decatur. An <br /> unencumbered balance of$18,000 remains of the grant which will be forfeited to Macon County <br /> if it is not utilized prior to the end of the County fiscal year. <br /> Since there are no programmed uses for the funds prior to November 30, City staff has met with <br /> representatives of Macon County and Keep Decatur Macon County Beautiful to prepare the <br /> proposed waste can program for downtown. It is proposed that the Merchant Street, Prairie <br /> Avenue, North Park and South Park Street rights-of-way will receive metal "Central Park" style <br /> receptacles consistent with the street furniture recommendations of the Comprehensive Plan. <br /> Secondary areas for the receptacles include North Main and North Franklin, surface parking lots, <br /> etc. An illustration of the proposed waste receptacle is attached. The total cost of the proposed <br /> waste receptacles is $17,676. <br /> Onyx Waste Disposal will collect from the new cans under the current contract. No additional <br /> collection costs will be borne by the City of Decatur as a result of this project. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: No objections have been received. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: The proposal has been reviewed by the City planning and <br /> forestry divisions, as well as Macon County and Keep Decatur Macon County Beautiful. <br />
