1 .
LEGAL DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM
No. 2003-8
May 29, 2003
TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and City Council Members
FROM: Steve n, City Manager
John . ter, Corporation Counsel f
RE: Collection Agency for Past Due Fines and Fees
As Council is aware, Macon County is making every effort to collect all revenue that
is due in order to reduce any operating deficits that it may have. Accordingly, it has
decided to retain a collection agency to attempt to recover past due fines and fees (from
traffic and criminal cases). Since some of this money will go to the City if collected, as per
law, the County has requested the City to pay a pro rata share of the fee due the collection
agency on the money collected. The City will pay nothing if no fines and fees are collected.
Staff recommends that the City enter this agreement with the County, since the City will also
benefit from the collection agency's efforts.
Questions regarding the proposed agreement should be directed to John Couter
(424-2807).
JWC:ps
cc: Wendy L. Morthland
Steven G. Jones
