COUNCIL COMMUNICATION FORM
Engineering & Infrastructure Memorandum
NO. 2002-66
September 3,2002
TO: Ionorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Steve Garman, City Manager
Stephen Swanson, P. E.,Director of Engineering & Infrastructure
Matthew C. Newell, P. E., City Engineer.A,
t..,
SUBJECT: MSC Roof Repair, City Project 2001-50
Extra Work Request
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
On November 5, 2001, Gates and Johnson Roofing and Sheet Metal Company (G&J) was
awarded a contract for $81,500 with the City to complete repairs to the roof of the Municipal
Service Center (MSC). During the progress of the repair wark, it was determined that a section
of the roof needed repairs which were outside the scope of the original contract. Staff
recommends that the attached change order in the amount of$6,700 be approved. This change
order authorizes the removal and replacement of approximately 150 feet of flashing on the north
side of the MSC roof.
BACKGROUND:
While G&J was conducting their roof repair work under this contract, a recurring leak in the roof
in the Fleet Maintenance area of the MSC building was brought to the attention of the
Engineering Division representative on the project. The area of the leak was investigated by both
City staff and representatives of G&J. It was determined that the repair of the section of the roof
where the leak is occurring was outside of the original intent of the work to be completed by
G&J. The repairs that are proposed include the removal and replacement of approximately 150
feet of existing flashing.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no known objections to this
resolution and bid award.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Jeff Hunt, Gates and Johnson
